Tecnis™ IOL
One of the latest improvements in eye surgery is the redesign of the intraocular lens implant (IOL) used in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange. When you're young, the natural crystalline lens of the eye (behind the pupil) has a unique shape, called "negative asphericity," that cancels out the "positive asphericity" of the cornea (front surface of the eye) resulting in no "spherical aberration." Spherical aberration causes images to appear out of focus, so the less there is in the eye's optical system, the sharper your vision.Until recently, all IOL's were spherical, resulting in an increase of this spherical aberration. The Tecnis™ IOL solves this problem by having a front surface that restores the balance between cornea and lens, resulting in a reduction of spherical aberration and blur compared with a standard IOL. Most doctors implanting these so-called "aspheric" IOL's notice an improved quality in their patient's vision. The Tecnis™ IOL is recognized by the federal government as a "new technology" IOL and reimburses a higher amount for this lens. Virginia Beach Eye Center utilizes this IOL in all appropriate cases when patients are not good candidates for, or do not choose the crystalens focusing lens implant.
