Nusite - Advanced Surface Ablation

Laser Vision Correction has two forms, surface laser and LASIK. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) was the original refractive procedure utilizing the excimer laser to reshape the surface of the cornea. Later, surgeons began making a flap in the cornea prior to the laser treatment to speed recovery and decrease pain (LASIK). This procedure "took off," quickly becoming the predominant procedure in the world. However, it soon became apparent that there are many short and long term safety risks with LASIK that are virtually eliminated with surface laser. Now with Nusite™ advanced surface ablation techniques, the speed of recovery and comfort level have improved to the point that many surgeons in the U.S. have switched back to 100% surface laser or are doing a much higher percentage of their cases this way. In addition, almost all studies comparing LASIK with surface ablation show at least a tendency towards better vision with surface procedures.

Complications Reduced or Eliminated with Nusite™ Advanced Surface Ablation vs. LASIK

  • Displaced flap
  • Thin flap
  • Irregular flap
  • Free cap
  • Buttonhole flap
  • Partial flap
  • Traumatized flap (injury displacing flap)
  • Corneal striae (folds in flap)
  • Epithelial ingrowth (cells growing beneath flap)
  • Diffuse lamellar keratitis (inflammation beneath flap)
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Progressive corneal thinning (often requiring corneal transplant)
  • Weakened biomechanical integrity

After healing, almost all corneas that have undergone surface laser have no detectable change in their appearance. They look pristine and perfectly normal. Whereas most post LASIK eyes have permanent microscopically visible scars.

It is true that Nusite™ Advanced Surface Ablation patients will initially experience slightly more irritation and a slower healing rate than LASIK patients, but the peace of mind you will have from choosing the safest procedure for the long term health of your eye with the best visual quality is worth it!
